Janina Young

‘Janina grew up in Frankfurt, Germany where she trained in classical ballet, soon followed by various modern dance techniques, as well as contemporary dance. Her choreographic movement language is shaped by a technical foundation, release philosophy and contact improvisation. She has been teaching various dance styles ranging from Vaganova ballet and floor barre to contemporary and classical modern techniques since 2014. She graduated from the Goethe University in Frankfurt with a BSc in business sciences. After working as a Junior Portfolio Manager, she moved to Brooklyn and founded AFFEKT Dance Company in 2023. The company believes that the display of contemporary movement exploration ignites creativity and inspiration and empowers the audience to celebrate their own voices. AFFEKT Dance Company has performed at the Young Choreographers Festival and at the Center for performance research in Brooklyn. AFFEKT hosted the first installment of their choreoLAB titled ‘Sketchbook’ this past fall. The company is currently workshopping choreography for their second self-produced show in June, as well as getting ready to host the second installment of ‘Sketchbook’.’
